Addressing Malnutrition in Tigray: The Teana Sabawian and Maedot Charity Malnutrition Project
In the face of a dire humanitarian crisis caused by the genocidal war on Tigray, the Malnutrition Project was launched on February 24, 2022, with the aim of combating malnutrition among children in Tigray. Originally intended to procure Therapeutic Foods, such as specially formulated milk (F-75 & F-100) and nutritious bars, challenges in obtaining these items led to the implementation of an alternative strategy centered around locally produced fortified food.
Recognizing the importance of collaboration, our team sought a reliable partner in Tigray. After careful consideration, Maedot Charity Organization [Maedot] was selected for their proven track record and dedication to improving lives in Tigray. This partnership marked the beginning of a transformative journey to tackle malnutrition and alleviate the suffering of vulnerable children.
Objectives:
- Provide fortified food to moderately malnourished children in Samre, Tigray, and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Tigray for a duration of one month. This targeted intervention aims to improve the overall health and well-being of these children.
- Generate employment opportunities for women in Tigray in the production and preparation of fortified food. By engaging women in these roles, the project aims to promote gender equality and enhance livelihoods within the local community.
Reaching the Communities in Need:
With the guidance of the Tigray Regional Health Bureau and the invaluable assessment conducted by our partner, the Malnutrition Project successfully provided 1544 kgs of fortified food. This nutritious aid was meticulously prepared by a certified nutritionist and a team of three skilled women in Mekelle. The impact of this effort extended to various locations, benefiting those most in need.
Samre: 290 moderately malnourished children, aged 5 and under, in Samre received sustained nutritional support for one month. The fortified food provided essential nutrients to address their specific nutritional needs.
Lachi: 24 orphaned and unaccompanied children in the southwest district of Mekelle, known as Lachi, were provided with fortified food, ensuring their access to vital nourishment during this challenging time.
Maywoyni Secondary School: In support of education and well-being, 20 malnourished children attending Maywoyni Secondary School were provided with fortified food, allowing them to thrive academically and physically.Mild Acute Malnutrition Cases: A total of 81 children diagnosed with mild acute malnutrition were given the necessary fortified food to prevent their condition from worsening, helping them regain their health and vitality.
